Celebrating the work of Luise Hercus: a memorial colloquium
Luise Hercus AM, FAHA (1926-2018) was one of the great linguists of Australia. This colloquium brings together her colleagues from many disciplines, linguistics, ethnography, history, music and Asian Studies to honour her work. Trained in Romance philology and in Sanskrit and Middle Indic studies, and attached to ANU for nearly 50 years, Luise Hercus worked with Indigenous Australians to document 56 languages, along with history, songs, oral literature and places. Short presentations will be given on her contributions to these fields. The colloquium is hosted by the ARC Centre of Excellence for the Dynamics of Language and the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies.
